Is It Possible To Live Off The Grid?

Living off the grid or relying solely on alternative energy is often regarded as a dream to some people. Even those that believe living off the grid is possible, think that you would have to give up most of your newest household equipments in order for that to be possible. Many more consider this is an effort only for granola loving hippies, whose modest ways coincide with fewer technologies, TVs, ACs, etc.  Well if you really want to know whether living off the grid is possible, the answer is an emphatic YES because so many people have already started powering their homes with renewable or alternative energy sources.

One thing you may want to know about living off the grid is that the more energy demanding appliances you have at home the more expensive your living off the grid quest will be because a larger power generating system will be required.

Due to the rising demand for alternative energy sources as a result of the ever increasing prices of fossil fuels in the global market, renewable energy engineers/technologists have been devising more efficient and easy to use components that will make living off the grid  as practical as possible for anyone who is conscious of  his/her energy/power consumption.

Due to the endeavors of renewable energy engineers, producing electricity from alternative energy sources is becoming an easier process by the day. All that is necessary for electricity to be produced from an alternative or green energy source (solar energy, wind energy, potential or kinetic energy from water at a height or water flowing) is the energy source and a suitable energy converting device. For example, if the sun is our primary source of energy then the device that will bring about conversion of solar energy to electrical energy is the photovoltaic cell.

The electricity generated from our photovoltaic cell will not be suitable for powering regular household items since it will be made up of a direct voltage. As such we use an inverter to convert it to a suitable alternating voltage that we can use with an inverter. The excess voltage that will be produced will be stored by a battery bank for use when there is no/limited solar energy supply.

Living off the grid with renewable power resources is almost totally automated as well apart from the fact that you will have to maintain your batteries. In order to successfully live off the grid you will have to make sure your energy system is one that will meet the demand of your energy needs.

Living off the grid can be a thrilling experience.  Just imagine how it feels to know that you have contributed to save the world from global warming and also to know that you will never have to worry about power outage again.
