Advantages And Disadvantages Of Solar Power

Solar energy seems to be the energy source of choice these days due to the fact that it is abundantly available. If you are pondering on the idea of switching your home power source from regular electricity supply to electricity that is solar generated, then you will need to know what the pros and cons of using solar power are. This article aims to point out some of the easily identifiable good sides and bad sides of using solar energy as a source of electricity.

Advantages Of Using Solar As A Source Of Power:

  • Access to Solar Energy is free. The only cost involved is the cost of purchasing the equipment/device that will convert the solar energy into a usable form for house hold appliances.
  • Solar Energy is a green energy source. In other words if you are using the sun as your source of electricity, you will not be guilty of contributing to global warming.
  • No harmful emissions are associated with using energy from the sun to produce electricity.
  • There is very little to no noise pollution available when you are converting solar energy to electricity. The only sound you may hear (negligible noise) is probably that associated with the inverter coils.
  • A solar electricity generator is very cheap to maintain.
  • It can be used in remote areas.
  • The power that will be generated by a solar electricity unit is predictable. The size of the unit has an important role to play in the energy that will be produced by the system.

Disadvantages Of Using The Sun As A Source Of Energy

  • The major disadvantage of using solar energy as a primary energy source is the cost involved in acquiring a solar power system. But this cost has been greatly cut down by technological advancements which has now made using solar electricity system possible for any one interested in using it.
  • The location/placement of your solar electricity system affects the overall electricity output available for your household appliances.
  • Solar energy is not available 24 hours a day, therefore there is need to store energy that will be used when the sun is out. This is not too much of a problem because you can easily store electrical energy with batteries for use when there is no sunshine or when the sun’s intensity is very low.
