Nuclear Energy? Help Essay?

So umm we are doing this project on Nuclear Energy and I've got two interest groups. 1:Greenpeace. 2:Nuclear Energy Institute.. and what i'm asking is which one is actually true because Greenpeace says Nuclear is all expensive, dangerous, pollutes air and everything while the Institute says it's cheap, does not pollute and is reliable... I have to write a good solution for these two interest groups but they are completely saying the opposite?? WTH???

Nuclear Pros and Cons
ADVANTAGES
  • Fission is the most energy for the least fuel with current technology.
  • Less fuel means less waste, and the waste is all accounted for, not released into the atmosphere to become someone else's problem.
  • Uranium is readily available, very common in the earth's crust (about the same as tin)
  • Economical - operating cost about the same as coal, fuel cost is a much smaller percentage of the total, therefore less susceptible to price fluctuations.
  • Reliable - Nuclear power plants have very high capacity factors, Much higher than solar
  • No combustion, no Co, CO2 or SO2 released.
  • Creates high paying, skilled jobs.
  • Reduce dependence on foreign oil/ fuel. Uranium available domestically and in oceans.
  • High temperature reactors could produce Hydrogen as well as electricity.
  • Fantastic safety record.
  • Does not require back-up and storage facilities like solar and wind.
  • More economical than solar per Mw produced.
  • Much smaller footprint, takes up less land than Solar or wind.
  • Actually releases less radioactive contamination than a coal fired plant of the same size.

DISADVANTAGES
  • Irrational fear of all things nuclear.
  • High cost to build and license, large initial investment for long term pay back.
  • Publicly accepted high level storage facility not domestically available.
  • Reprocessing facility not domestically available.
  • High cost of personnel.
  • Security concerns, proliferation and terrorism.
Nuclear power, I believe is the best, safest, most reliable, current technology to provide energy. The plants operating now are safe and the new designs are even safer.
Building 100's of new nuclear power plants would improve the economy, reduce or eliminate dependence on foreign oil, create jobs, reduce pollution, and provide for future technological advancement.

I have been working with nuclear power for about 30 years, I would be glad to have a Nuclear power plant or high level waste disposal facility in my backyard. My family and I live in a home within 10 miles of a nuclear power plant. (where I work) I have a great understanding of the risks involved and am completely comfortable with a plant "in my backyard".
Using Chernobyl as a reason not to build is like saying because of the Hindenburg I will never fly in a commercial airliner.

Nuclear power has the smallest environmental impact of any current energy production method per unit of energy produced. One fuel pellet about the size of a pencil eraser produces the same energy as about 1 ton of coal, and if reprocessed 2/3 of what’s left can be reclaimed. Nuclear power is our best option for reliable, environmentally friendly, base-load electrical power.
NEI has information based on facts from people who work & live with nuclear power. Greenpeace has lawyers and politicians/activists.

Can Solar Power Really Lower Your Electricity Bill?

Hi I'm 4Life and I want to know if solar power really lowers your electricity bill? I also want to know what is cheaper and better for earth, gas or electricity for heating water? And how much would it cost to have solar power for a 6000 sq ft home, not counting heating water, just lights, electronics and AC.
Also what do you think is better, money wise, over time to buy solar panels or to by a hybrid car?

Number Of Solar Panels And Windturbines Required To Power UK?

Hello, my name is Dave and I'm in serious need of some statistics for writing an essay and was wondering

How many wind turbines it would take to power the United Kingdom (UK) and the World
respectively?

Also how many solar panels would it take to power the United Kingdom (UK) and the World
respectively?

Thanks in advance for any answers please give source if you can.

If you think you can help Dave please leave a comment.

Photovoltaic Systems Engineering, Third Edition (Hardcover)

Photovoltaic Systems Engineering, Third Edition (Hardcover) -

Photovoltaic Systems Engineering, Third Edition is a book written by Roger Messenger and Jerry Ventre. The third edition which builds on the popularity of the first two editions of Photovoltaic Systems Engineering, is due out in March 2010.

This book which is info packed is also useful for students. The text is packed with additional practical considerations added to the theoretical background associated with mechanical and structural design. A modified top-down approach organizes the material to quickly cover the building blocks of the PV system. The focus is on adjusting the parameters of PV systems to optimize performance. The last two chapters present the physical basis of PV cell operation and optimization.

Renewable Energy Solutions

The need to reduce our over-dependency on non renewable energy sources can not be over-emphasized especially with the energy crisis that is going on around the globe. Renewable energy, also referred to as alternative energy is a naturally generated energy and it can be said to be the opposite of energy derived from fossil fuels. It is any form of energy derived from the sun, wind, moving water or any other renewable source. The common forms of renewable energy are solar energy, wind energy and hydro energy.

Solar Energy Solutions: Solar energy or energy radiated from sun is the most abundant form of energy available on earth. It can also be said to be the most important form of energy in our plant, the reason is because plants use energy from the sun to manufacture carbohydrates from a process called photosynthesis. The sun’s energy consists of light and heat energy. It can be used directly for heating water via solar heating systems, but this is not the only use of solar energy.

Solar energy can be converted into other forms of energy. One interesting conversion of solar energy that has been keenly followed by man for ages is the conversion of solar energy into electricity. Converting the sun’s energy into electricity is achieved using photovoltaic cells. Several technologies have been perfected over the years in order to make the conversion of solar energy to electrical energy more efficient and I can tell you that you can have access to the secrets of building you own solar-electricity system if you so desire.
